Though the basic membership of T. Rex was two people (sometimes augmented by other musicians), the sound usually was the equivalent of a whole band.

When the five-member family group the Jacksons took its first steps toward stardom in 1963, five-year - old Michael was included mostly for the novelty effect of his youthful energy and dancing ability. As he outgrew the role of “baby” of the act (there were other Jacksons behind him who served in that capacity), he showed steady improvement in performing skills to the point that he became unofficial leader rather than a mere group member. In time, his achievements as a solo artist and songwriter overshadowed those of his brothers, even though the chemistry among them kept the Jacksons among the premier groups in rock and soul into the late-1980s.
